“For if a person shifts their caution to their own reasoned choices and the acts of those choices, they will at the same time gain the will to avoid, but if they shift their caution away from their own reasoned choices to things not under their control, seeking to avoid what is controlled by others, they will then be agitated, fearful, and unstable.”
-Epictetus, Discourses, 2.1.12
When you choose to run from your problems you’re doing yourself a disservice. You only have a finite amount of time during each day to distribute your limited amount of energy. Why spend that energy running or holding onto a problem? You’re digging yourself a deeper hole, and with that, more energy is required to escape. And with that more pain will be endured.
Face your problems right now because the longer you wait, the longer you will have to carry around that heavy cognitive load weighing you down.
Even if you are the only person with knowledge of the real problem, you cannot stew on it. Because it is intrinsic, you will always know it is there until you face it and move onward.
You mustn’t wait for an opportunity to get your problems out in the air, take the initiative to. Don’t think twice, just act upon it. You and I both know how good it will feel when absolved. Don’t move through life feeling agitated, fearful, and unstable. How will you ever fulfill your full potential?
