Some Pleasures Come At a Cost

“Robbers, perverts, killers, and tyrants-gather for your inspection their so-called pleasures.”

-Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 6.34

Robbers, perverts, killers, and tyrants all have something in common. They seek pleasure from asserting their authority on others with unspeakable acts that hurt people. I would like to segway to a less morbid take on this.

In life and in business, you always must provide 51% of the value in any relationship. That way you knowingly helped someone out and now you have real leverage. If you start seeking your pleasure by providing others with more value than they provide you, you’ve already won. It always comes full circle to benefit you in the long run.

Put all your pleasures up for evaluation, are they hurting others, are they hurting you? Figure out all the repercussions so you can effectively trim your pleasures so they’re benefitting all involved, including yourself. That’s the ultimate pleasure.
